WALKS IN SPA WOODS
In this part, we offer walks to spa woods. They form a part of Carlsbad way of life since the age of Romanticism. Network of forest paths was gradually established; gazebos, resting-places, benches and gloriets were built. Lookout towers provide unique view of vast surroundings, the best-known being the Diana lookout. The network of marked paths is almost 100 km long.

TRIPS TO NEAR SURROUNDINGS OF CARLSBAD
Andělská hora (approximately 5 km from Carlsbad in the direction of Prague)
A pilgrimage point and a castle over a little town with beautiful view of the region to the south-east from Carlsbad. The Engelsburg Castle was founded at the end of 14th century, in 17th century it was renovated, and damaged by fire in 1718, today it is only a ruin. Cemetery church of the Holy Trinity from the end of 17th century.
Approachable: by car - direction to Prague, by bicycle, by foot - following tourist signs across The Goethe's Lookout and golf course.

 

Dalovice
A village near Carlsbad, New Renaissance Style castle from 1899, New Romanesque Style Chapel of Mary the Virgin Comforter from 1898, remnants of Slavic settlement, monument of German poet Theodor Körner in renewed castle park, protected 800 to 1000 years old oak tree, 9 m perimeter in the height of 1.3 m above ground, 17 meters at the level of ground.
Approachable: 5 minutes from the centre of Carlsbad by bus, street bus or train.

 

Kyselka
A bath resort located in the valley of the Ohře river at the edge of the Doupov Mountains, curative springs known from medieval times, mineral water called "Buková Kyselka" and "Kysibelka" known since 1614, since 1873 the water was dispatched under the name "Mattoniho kyselka" after Jindřich Mattoni, the enterprise founder (whose statue is placed there), New Renaissance Style Castle - Mattoni's Villa, The Otto's Pavilion with a spring on the hillside named to honour a visit of Greek King Otta in 1852, new mineral water filling house

Loket nad Ohří
A small town founded in 11th century, dominated by Gothic Style castle, protected historical town zone since 1979
Important Objects: ancient stone castle, Slavic rotunda, town hall building, St. Wenceslas' Church in Baroque Style, Trinity Column, St. Anne Chapel, protected town zone includes old houses with Gothic Style cores, town walls, The Robičská Tower and a square tower at the entrance to the town.

Svatoš Rocks (Svatošské skály)
National natural monument "Jan Svatoš" from 1933, area of 1.95 ha, located in valley of the Ohře river, between Carlsbad and Loket, a group of massive granite rocks forming unusual shapes (such as "petrified wedding procession"), Venetian Drift (artificial cave, where mineral riches were sought), fort Old Loket (primeval habitation on rocky cliff over the Ohře river from the middle stone age), nature trail Doubí - Svatoš Rocks made accessible in 1978, 12 km long, 12 stops with information from geology, archaeology, history and botany, a favourite place for bicycle trips
Approachable: by car, by street bus - to Carlsbad - Doubí, from there by foot or by bicycle following tourist signs.

 

Šemnice Rock (Šemnická skála, 641 m) (9 km from Carlsbad)
A phonolite hill steeply descending to the river valley, natural reserve - protected steppe hillside and a stock owl rookery. Protected natural object. Accessible from southern side from the road between the Angel Rock and the Šemnice village.

KRUŠNÉ HORY

Boží Dar
The highest situated town in the Central Europe (1028 m) located in close proximity of the highest mountain of Krušné hory, Klínovec; important mining town producing silver and tin in 16th century, important tourist winter sport resort, starting point of both foot and bicycle routes by mountain bikes. National natural reserve Boží Dar Peat Bog with nature trail situated nearby, including several mountain peat bogs (almost 1000 ha) on plateau; the Špičák hill (1115 m above sea level) - the biggest basaltic mound in Europe; the Blatenský Ditch, artificially made - cultural-technical monument with a nature trail; border crossing to Germany.

Horní Blatná
Originally mining colony, one of the most important tin mining centres at the beginning of 16th century, rectory church of St. Lawrence from 1754, nature trail Horní Blatná - Wolf Pits (natural monument, up to 15 metres deep and very narrow depression was formed by deep mining of tin ore).

Jáchymov
A bath resort with extensive tradition, protected historical town zone, after its founding in 1516, famous for its silver mines and striking of coins called thalers; in 19th century mining of uranium ore for production of uranium paint; Mr and Mrs Curies discovered polonium and radium in the waste there in 1908. In 1906, first radon baths emerge.
Today an important bath resort, and winter sport resort.

Nejdek
The centre of the Rolava river region, tin mining in 19th century (Nejdek iron works, present-day Metalis). Monuments: Romanesque - Gothic Style castle tower (remains of former castle from a period around 1250, Renaissance bell in the tower from 1579), Baroque church of St. Martin from 1756, evangelic church from 1904, Stations of the Cross - serpentine path with stops

The Region of Nejdek - Nature and Natural Parks
The Stag Hill (Jelení vrch) - preserved area of the Carlsbad region of Krušné hory along the upper stream of Moor Brook (Slatinný potok) with high biological and aesthetic values. Přebuz - natural park with area of almost 10,000 ha with peat bogs, hill meadows, ponds and brooks is one of the most charming places in the region.
Blatenský Hill (1043 m above sea level) - forested hill with 21 m high lookout tower from 1913.
Dragon Rock (Dračí skála) - a granite rock cliff with limited view near the highest point of track Potůčky - Carlsbad
Trousnická Rock - a granite rock cliff with excellent view
Vlčinec - an accessible little rock with a view of the central region of Krušné hory

Nová Role
Situated at the foot of Krušné hory, its origin goes back to 5th - 6th century, when it was founded by Slavic tribes, important sight: Romanesque-Gothic church of St. Michael from the years 1240 - 1255, porcelain factory from 1922

Ostrov nad Ohří
The second largest town of the Carlsbad region with 20,000 inhabitants is one of the oldest habitations, original habitants were concentrated around St. James's Church, which is the oldest building of the town; Baroque castle area with castle park in place of medieval fort, the complex includes ruins of the Šlikovský Castle, the Lauenburgský Castle with White Gate and White Yard, early Baroque folly from the second half of 17th century located in park (today it houses a branch of Carlsbad Art Gallery). An important historic core with preserved Gothic ground plan - burgess houses, Renaissance town hall from 1569, St. Michael's Church

Pernink
Situated in the western part of Krušné hory, a village is dominated by Church of the Holy Trinity from the year 1719; a holiday resort, summer and winter sports resort, 5 ski tows for sport and holidays, cross-country skiing grounds with the possibility of connection to tourist and bicycle routes and main skiing route of Krušné hory.

Potůčky
A village on the German border, a border crossing for pedestrians and bicyclists Potůčky - Johanngeorgenstadt, dominated by Roman Catholic Church Visitation of Mary the Virgin

Chyše
A small town founded in 1169, originally Renaissance castle adapted in Baroque Style - preserved oil painting by P. Brandl from 1708; early Baroque church of Raise of the Sacred Cross from 17th century with valuable bells from 1520 with Latin and Czech inscription; natural park Upper Střela - the Střela river basin (to Rabštejn)

Manětín
First mentioned in 1169, a Renaissance castle built in 1587, predecessor of the present-day castle decorated by Baroque sculptures; the castle is connected by covered passage with former castle Church of the Birth of John the Baptist, a building with Gothic Style elements, Pilgrimage Church of St. Barbara, paintings by Peter Brandl in both churches and in the castle, the town is decorated by numerous statues by pupils of Matyáš Braun, became protected historical zone, a jewel of Baroque architecture in Western Bohemia

Valeč
Unique example of Italian countryside Baroque urbanism in Bohemia, first mentioned in 1358, examples of regional folk architecture, castle with park, it became protected historical town zone in 1991.

Žlutice
First mentioned in 1186, a little town founded in 1375, historical core, St. Peter and Paul's Church, Holy Trinity Column, remnants of late Gothic castle; large underground passages partly accessible as a part of visitation of the museum, in which a replica of The Žlutice Hymn Book, one of the most beautiful pieces of illumining art of 16th century, is stored (the original is stored in Monument of National Literature in Prague).

SLAVKOV FOREST
Protected landscape area Slavkov Forest is situated among Carlsbad, Mariánské Lázně, Kynšperk and Javorná. It was established in 1974 on the area of 640 sq. km and it should protect mineral springs in the bath triangle Carlsbad - Mariánské Lázně - Františkovy Lázně. They came into being in connection with fading volcanic activity from the Tertiary. It is a unique landscape area with large forests and peat bogs, and various fauna and flora. In Tertiary, isolated volcanoes emerged (Komorní Hůrka, Angel Rock, Uhelný vrch). Discharges of gas and mineral place occur till present days, area of warm or hot mineral springs surrounds Carlsbad. The area of Slavkov Forest includes 21 small natural reserves, such as Křížaly, Homolka, Kladské rašeliny, Pluhův bor and others.

 

Bečov nad Teplou
An older Slavic village, over which a solid Gothic castle was founded by the family of Lords of Osek in 14th century. In 16th century, a lower castle with a large park were added to the oldest part of the castle, main building with Gothic chapel from 15th century and castle tower were preserved till present. From 2000, valuable Reliquary of St. Moor, which is considered to be the second most precious relic after Czech crown jewels, will be a part of the exhibition. Lázně Kynžvart
A little bath resort situated in the middle of the bath triangle Carlsbad - Mariánské Lázně - Františkovy Lázně, treatment of respiratory diseases, an impressive Empire Style castle built by the family of Metternich in the years 1821 - 1839, castle library and collections of china, minerals, military guns and other artistic pieces. Approachable: by car - Carlsbad - Bečov - Mnichov - Prameny - Kynžvart, Carlsbad - Loket -Horní Slavkov - Krásno - Prameny - Kynžvart

 

Teplá
Important from 12th century; originally a custom house on the important trade route from Cheb to Prague; became town at the end of 13th century; after a monastery is founded, the town and its villages are donated to the monastery.

Monastery Teplá

Founded in 1193; during its 800-year-long existence, it was entirely plundered 12 times, burnt to the ground 6 times, its population died off from a pestilence twice and it was to be cancelled 6 times. Till present, the complex of monastery buildings includes many historical and cultural monuments, the most important being monastery church of Annunciation of Mary the Virgin and the monastery library (built by J. Schaffer) - houses 100,000 volumes, 660 of them are manuscript codices. The monastery was a source of education, culture and progress. It also initiated the foundation of Mariánské Lázně.
